TORRANCE, Ca. (April 11, 2012) – Phiten®, the innovator and original maker of the titanium necklace and precious metal-infused wellness products, today announced an international partnership with Japanese professional baseball superstar, and starting pitcher for the Texas Rangers, Yu Darvish.
“Phiten has supported me throughout my career in Japan and it made perfect sense to continue representing Phiten in the U.S. with the Texas Rangers,” said Darvish. “I’m excited for fans in both countries to see my new signature necklace and bracelet combo that we are planning to release later this year.”
Darvish makes his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers this season. Born in Habikino, Osaka, he pitched in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as the 2009 World Baseball Classic as a member of the Japanese national team to help Japan clinch its second consecutive tournament title. At age 25, Darvish was considered by many to be the best pitcher in Japanese professional baseball. On January 18 of this year, the Texas Rangers signed Darvish to a $60M dollar contract for six years.
“It’s great to see Yu make his way to the United States to play for the Texas Rangers,” said Joe Furuhata, public relations and marketing manager of Phiten USA. “Yu has long been a loyal supporter of Phiten and we’re excited to continue the relationship we started in Japan and build on it here in the U.S.”
Darvish is listed at 6 feet 5 inches tall and 215 pounds. Darvish throws a four-seam fastball that usually sits around 91 to 94 mph and tops out at 97 mph. He also has a hard slurve that clocks around 80 mph with a vicious break. He complements his two primary pitches with a wide repertoire of secondary pitches, including a two-seam fastball, cutter, curveball and a splitter.
Darvish was scouted extensively by Major League Baseball teams including the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Atlanta Braves while he was in junior high school. As he entered his senior year of high school, the Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets expressed interest in signing him, but Darvish opted to play for the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league, the highest level of baseball in Japan. In 2005 he became the 12th pitcher in NPB history to win a game in his professional debut as a rookie straight out of high school.
Darvish had a stellar professional career in Japan where he earned Golden Glove and Eiji Sawamura awards as well as two Most Valuable Player and Best Nine awards. He was the third player in NPB history to win two MVP awards during his first five years in the league.
Darvish joins an array of elite Phiten athletes that include stars from the MLB, NBA, NFL, PGA Tour and more. To learn more about Yu Darvish and his involvement with Phiten, visit www.phitenusa.com.
