Takei Rikako’s Training For Ironman World Championships

Posted

We continue with our 6-part series on Takei Rikako’s upcoming journey to Kona, Hawaii. There she will be competing against the best of the best triathletes in the world at the Ironman World Championship! If you haven’t read the first 2 blogs in this series, we encourage you to look at these past blog posts to catch up!First in our series is our Introduction to Takei Rikako and second part What Makes Takei Compete at 56!

What is your typical day?

Takei:I typically do training about an hour/a day on weekdays and do a lot of volume on the weekends. I am always gradually increasing my distance or time to be better than my last training. Up, down, up, down … *laughs* – it’s always work!

Do you work full time? How do you handle the training and daily life?

Takei:Right now, I work full time and also have a second job, which I work almost 60 hours per week, so I do training when day off from each job then stick with it hard. Sometime I run a long distance after work and do a long ride when day off. There is only 15 hours per week that I can do the training lately, but that is my choice and no complain … my daily life is extremely busy, no time to be negative, always keep on going forward. I also keep a training journal… I ‘ll even share a page from it with everyone!

What is the typical response when you tell them that you are doing a triathlon?

Takei:*Smiles* Everyone says “that’s great”, wow! They are all very encouraging and very sweet. Some of my friends are coming to see me compete at Kona in October.

How do you motivate yourself to push forward in training?

Takei: I motivate myself by visualizing myself on the podium. How I’m going to look, how I will feel and that keeps me motivated to keep going. I want to be on that podium!

Are there any days or have you ever had that feeling of hitting the snooze button instead of training? How do you handle those days?

Takei: My goal is to reach the Ironman distances of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile run, raced in that order and without a break. I need to have this by the time I reach the competition in Kona!

It’s been tough lately - very hard. Sometimes I don't want to do a training day. Then I think “Why am doing this?”I want to quit all the time. My main goal is to do it no matter how hard, no matter how old I am – sometimes it gets to me and that's okay. I still go and then I get like a climber trying to get on top of mountain and then reaching the summit kind of feeling after I push through. I’ll just keep going...
